Waste Disposal - Landfill Gas

As of March 2010 South West Solid Waste Commission has been flaring landfill gas being generated from the entombed waste contained in the cells. The next step is to assess the gas for volume and quality. Feasibility studies are being conducted for alternate uses for landfill gas such generating electricity or as a source of heat.

Rows of individual well housings traverse the landfill cells containing the solid waste below.

The plastic well casing is sealed near the surface.Below this level the casing is perforated to allow for collection and extraction of the gas.

New wells will be installed and connected to the collection system as additional cells are filled and closed.
