The Society for Plastics Industry (SPI) developed standardized codes based on the type of plastics used for manufacturing containers.

The South West Solid Waste Commission has added the collection of the #1 and #2 plastics to its recycling program. In order for this program to work well we need you to do some things prior to dropping off the plastics at the new blue bins.

Recycling Plastic Containers is Easy - Do Your Part

Remove lids, tops, and devices

Remove the lids, tops, and any devices

Reduce the containers - less space is used up at the recycle bins.

Please reduce containers
Please rinse containers

Rinse the container thoroughly. We want your containers NOT the contents.

Look for the number cartoon

Bottoms up! Look on the bottom of the bottle/container for the mobius loop with a number 1 or 2 inside the triangle

Number 1 plastic mobius

Examples of #1’s

  • cooking oil
  • honey
  • dish detergent
  • peanut butter jars
  • oven safe food trays
Number 2 plastic modius

Examples of #2’s

  • milk jugs
  • ice cream containers
  • liquid laundry detergent
  • fabric softner
  • bleach

Plastics NOT Accepted

  • foam plastics (such as coffee cups)
  • milk bags
  • diapers
  • garden hoses
  • bedding plant containers
  • dishes and cutlery
  • herbicide, fertilizer or pesticide containers
  • toys, laundry baskets
  • hypodermic syringes
  • binders
  • packaging materials such as bubble wrap
  • tube containers (toothpaste, etc.)
