Education - Recycling Winners

The 2010 – 2011 school year is almost over and the South West Solid Waste Commission would like to announce the winners of our school recycling program.

From September to May the weight of the paper and cardboard collected from each school was compiled and awards were determined on a per capita basis (total weight from each school divided by the number of students).

The total tonnage of paper and cardboard collected from all the schools was 59 tonnes for the 2010-2011 school year. This is just up a bit from last year’s 58 tonnes.

Schools were divided into two categories:

1) Elementary schools
2) High schools, consolidated, and middle schools.

Gold, Silver and Bronze Metals were awarded in the two categories.

Your recycling efforts have been proven to be extremely beneficial to our environment. You have saved 1066 trees, 1,661,208 litres of water, 142 m3 of landfill space and 263,340 kilowatt hours of power. Every effort counts!.

The South West Solid Waste Commission, solid waste authority for South Western New Brunswick, has been operating a regional recycling program since 1996. In 2002 the South West Solid Waste Commission extended its recycling program to area schools, supplying blue recycling bins to each school within its service district. As well the Commission provided blue totes for each classroom. This region-wide school recycling program was the first of its kind in New Brunswick. Since 2002 several other regions have initiated similar programs.

Congratulations to all schools!  Let’s go for over 60 tonnes next year! The South West Solid Waste Commission would like to wish you all a safe and enjoyable summer and remember to reduce, reuse and recycle!
