The South West Solid Waste Commission (SWSWC) recently held its June meeting at the Hemlock Knoll waste management facility. At the meeting the regional waste authority honoured Mr. Frank Stevens, the Commissioner who has represented Blacks Harbour, after nine years of faithful service.

Frank served his community and helped in the establishment of several of the SWSWC’s activities that were developed during his term on the board. The regional school recycling program and the popular white goods recycling program were two such programs.

Frank has agreed to stay on and serve on one of the SWSWC’s subcommittees while his replacement Mr.David Mahar, a Councillor with the Village of Blacks Harbour, has become the Village’s representative on the Commission.

Other news from the meeting included the successful completion of the landfill gas flare station, a progress report on the construction of cell seven and an update on the new leachate sand filter which is expected to come online this year. Future development at Hemlock Knoll was also discussed with field investigation on landfill gas flow and utilization options continuing to be studied.

SWSWC has recently become an official paint depot sanctioned by Product Care Inc., the paint industry’s official agent. The Commission is eagerly awaiting expected legislation and regulation on used oil and glycol which is expected shortly from the New Brunswick Department of the Environment.
